Homemade Starbucks Matcha Frappuccino

Starbucks Matcha Frappuccino is a frozen green tea drink made in a blender. The drink is topped with whipped cream.

Starbucks in the US uses sweetened matcha while in Canada, it’s made with non-sweetened matcha. This recipe uses non-sweetened matcha.

All Starbucks Frappuccinos are made using a Frappuccino base syrup that makes the drink smooth and creamy.

This recipe uses a homemade Frappuccino base syrup to get that same texture.

Recipe Highlights

  • This drink is made by blending matcha green tea, milk, vanilla syrup, ice, and homemade Frappuccino base syrup.
  • The quick and easy whipped cream is made in seconds using a handheld milk frother.
  • This homemade copycat drink recreates a grande size (16 ounces) of the Starbucks Match Frappuccino recipe, including the whipped cream.

Ingredient Notes

Matcha Frappuccino (Starbucks Copycat Recipe) - Oh, How Civilized (3)
  • Homemade Frappuccino base syrup: This is the key ingredient to making Frappuccinos just like Starbucks. Make a batch ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator.
  • Matcha: Starbucks uses a pre-sweetened matcha but I couldn’t find one that was as good so I got unsweetened matcha and added sweetener separately. This is the way Starbucks makes Matcha Frappuccinos in Canada. In the US, they use the pre-sweetened matcha.
  • Milk: All Frappuccinos are made with whole milk at Starbucks but you can use whatever kind of milk you like.
  • Vanilla syrup: Use homemade or store-bought vanilla syrup. The syrup is used to sweeten the Frappuccino and the whipped cream.
  • Heavy cream: To make the whipped cream.
  • Ice: Use filtered water to make ice if possible.

Expert Tips

  • Don’t add ice first into the blender since you won’t get an efficient blend. Add liquids first.
  • If you want to make this drink without Frappuccino base syrup, try my It uses sweetened condensed milk instead of the base syrup. It has less of a smooth texture but still delicious.
  • The longer you whisk the heavy cream and vanilla syrup with a handheld milk frother, the thicker it’ll get. To get fluffy whipped cream, whisk until you get soft peaks, which should take about 30 seconds. Spoon the whipped cream onto the drink.
  • The brighter the green the matcha, the higher the quality. Look to spend at least $20. Anything that costs less than that will have a muddy green, almost brown color.
